Sirous Kavehercy - Darts Group Interview

DartGroup Greenspot Session on Culture

Interview with DartGroup

Interview Transcript in English

What does the statement ‘Culture eats strategy for breakfast’ mean to you?

  • It is quite simple. Many companies experience the consequences of this almost daily without recognizing it. Whether you are the CEO of a company, a marketer running a campaign or an employee communicating with a colleague culture is constantly providing context for everything we do. In a broader sense, culture gives context to our businesses, communications and the way we use media online and offline. And the interesting thing is, no one can describe culture, while it influences every single aspect of our needs, assumptions, attitudes, expectations and perceptions. When companies recognize the power of culture it will become an added value to their existing strategies. People are loyal to culture and not strategy!

What is the cultural context of the digital revolution?

  • One of the key advantages of the digital media, websites, social media, mobile or any other digital channel, is that they give us access to a global audience. You can reach anyone and any company anywhere in the world using these channels but that is where the real work starts. The digital communications might have removed the geographical borders between the countries, but we are still tied to cultural boundaries. As strange as it may sound to some of us, digital revolution means different things to different cultures. A mobile phone maybe more of a luxury object for someone in the West but it is a main source of information for someone in China and a means of doing business for someone in Africa. To remain effective in a global economy it is essential for every professional to understand those cultural aspects of the digital revolution.

Are marketers and communication specialists sufficiently aware of culture?

  • They definitely think they are. We all read the same books and learn the same theories about communications and marketing, most of which are produced and published in US and Western Europe. You will be amazed to find out how the other 91% of the world’s population (outside the US and Western Europe) may have a different perspective on life because of their cultural background. Add to this the fact that people are travelling and migrating more often across the globe and bringing their culture with them. To this extent I think communication specialists have yet a lot of work to do to grasp This Culture Thing!

Why should everyone come to the Greenspot on the 19th of March and what would they miss if they don’t?

  • If you want your business to still exist in ten years time you can’t afford ignoring culture. This Greenspot will help you rethink your views and roles in today’s world. And those who think culture is not important will probably miss the boat and gradually become irrelevant!

Workshop Invitation

Greenspot---Sirous

Sirous is specialist in interculturele communicatie.

Patricia Andersen
